Hip-Hop Bio:

Luniz (formerly the LuniTunes) is a duo from Oakland, California, formed by Yukmouth (Jerold Ellis III) and Numskull (Garrick Husbands). They were signed to Virgin Records, Noo Trybe Records, and C-Note Records. They were the flagship act for C-Note Records. The group is best known for the internationally successful hit in 1995 titled "I Got 5 on It". The two friends knew each other since junior high. The duo gained fame after six years together when they appeared on Dru Down's Explicit Game album. Their debut album, Operation Stackola, was released in 1995 and knocked Michael Jackson's HIStory off the top of Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart on the strength of the Club Nouveau-sampling platinum hit single "I Got 5 on It," which featured guest vocals by Michael Marshall of Timex Social Club. The album's lyrics took novel, comic approaches to sex, drugs, and everyday occurrences. Neither Lunitik Muzik (1997) nor Silver & Black (2002) fared as well, and they subsequently split.

Music Career

Jordan Peele used the 1995 Luniz song ‘I Got 5 On It’ for his horror-noir movie trailer for ‘Us,’. Michael Marshall, a Bay Area musician is who inspired and performed the iconic hook. Marshall says Luniz came to the table with the phrase “I got five on it.” The rest of the hook, he changed. “The hook idea was a little more jumbled than what you hear now,” Marshall said. “It was too many words. I edited it and did my thing and that’s what we have now.” Yukmouth, one-half of Luniz, recalled via email: “I wrote the ‘I Got 5 on It’ hook but it sounded wack with me just saying it. We needed a singer and Tone Capone had the perfect guy from Timex Social Club, which was Mike Marshall. We made a classic!” With Tone Capone’s production, Luniz’s verses, and Marshall’s hook, “I Got 5 on It” became a top 10 hit.
